How to Recognize and Prevent Winter Home Exterior Issues

Midwestern winters are notorious for excessive snowfall and bitter cold. While we can take steps to prepare our homes (and ourselves), we can’t guarantee a problem-free season. Use this guide to help prevent and recognize winter home exterior issues.

Wind Damage

Our region recently experienced unprecedented storms for this time of year, including the first tornadoes ever reported in Minnesota during the month of December. Strong winds can pry up metal flashing around chimneys and pipes, as well as crack or even completely remove shingles and gutter systems. Cold winter temperatures only leave the materials more susceptible to damage.

Keep an eye out for loose or damaged shingles, particularly around the edges of the roof, and have them repaired right away. Water stains and/or bubbling paint on interior walls and ceilings can indicate unseen exterior damage is allowing moisture in. If you notice any of these warning signs, contact Armor Construction to schedule a free inspection.

Snow and Ice Damage

Excessive snow, freezing temps, and ice accumulation are to be expected during Midwestern winters, and they can wreak havoc on your home’s exterior. Vinyl siding expands and contracts as temperatures fluctuate, and extreme cold can make the material brittle and prone to cracking. This can lead to unwanted heat exchange and chilly drafts, decreasing your home’s HVAC efficiency and increasing your utility bills.

Additionally, moisture can sneak in through these cracks and lead to bigger issues like mold/mildew growth and structural damage. Remember to check your siding throughout the season and repair minor damage ASAP to prevent major – and more expensive – problems down the road.

Ice Dams

The added weight and stress of accumulating snow on the roof can create cracks, leaks, and other issues. Perhaps the most common are ice dams, which prevent melting snow from draining properly and can seriously damage your roof and gutters. Help avoid this by keeping gutters clear of debris and removing snow from the roof throughout the winter.

Excess Moisture Around Windows and Doors

Snow and ice can weaken window and door frames, and the severe cold can pull caulking away from windows and create leaks. And when the spring thaw hits, the excess moisture can cause wood rot, mold and mildew growth, and pest infestation. Inspect windows and doors throughout the season and reapply caulk as necessary to maintain a tight seal. When temperatures begin to rise, check for and repair signs of water damage around the framing.

We may be creeping up on the new year, but we still have plenty of snow and brutally cold days before springtime arrives. Use these tips to help prevent winter home exterior issues before the extreme outdoor conditions take a serious toll.
